• New Record Office, Carlisle
A landmark in the progress of the new Carlisle Archives was celebrated on 12 October 2009. A "Topping Out" ceremony was held at the Petteril Bank site to mark the completion of the roof and the external envelope of the new extension, and a time capsule was buried. This contained letters from local children from Petteril Bank Primary School who wrote about their lives and their hopes for the future, and included their photographs. The County Council included a set of plans for the project, and photographs of the construction progress to date, and a scroll commemorating the event was also put into the time capsule.

The ceremony was performed by the Chairman of Cumbria County Council, Councillor Roger Bingham, who placed the time capsule outside the public entrance to the new Archives Centre, watched by the schoolchildren. The capsule will provide a snapshot of life in 2009 should anyone in the future dig it up! The ceremony received wide publicity and featured on local television and radio channels and also in the local press.

Cllr Roger Bingham, Chairman of Cumbria County Council, said:
"It is amazing how much progress has been made in such a short period of time. The people of Carlisle and north Cumbria can look forward to a state of the art facility when it opens next year."
